What I seek in painting waves is something that the human being knows but the camera lens misses. It has something to do with movement and the sheer brevity of the form. Itís the way walking by the sea will transform a bad mood. We delight in the million shades of gray - the wave, a shape shifter silvered with olive and lavender - a flash of white in a night ocean. At the same time we feel the oceanís fierceness and know that the sea has its own imperatives which remain a mystery. In some way, the wave is our kin, riding its brief individuality out in a great ocean that is very close to the fluid in our veins.

I love the puzzle of printmaking: ìthinkingî out the image, the challenge of the various techniques. Over the years, I've come to see some images that are just made for the simplicity and starkness of black and white, or suggest a mezzotint or aquatint. I also appreciate the opportunity to create affordable art since I can make editions.
